The easiest way to test SQL Server Express queries is to use the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) query tester. A quick search of the Internet shows many people have used it, including myself. SSMS itself doesn't provide any built in query tester tools, but as we mentioned earlier you can also use Query Advisor which isn't a native SSMS utility but instead runs from within Windows PowerShell. This post has my first attempt to use that in a GUI and few tips on how to use it.
Note I'm using Server 2012 and the "Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services" SDK, not Windows PowerShell. You can download the SSMS 2013 SDK here.
Setup and Testing Your Databases in SQL Server Express
There are two ways to do setup and testing. First the simplest is to install and configure SQL Server Express then use the Query Advisor to get a Test Result Report which shows you the SQL Server Express query you ran. In this case we'll select a database name to view and select a database name to run our test against and we will select a database on the test server (and not current server). In either case if you are running a test against local database you may also want to test against a remote database in order to make sure that the results pass all tests you set up above. I'm just going to use an SQL Server Express local database but you can also select a remote database or use SQL Server Agent for testing.
